2000 USBCHA/ABCA Champions
Angie Coker and Sam (ABCA 42236):
National Champion
Bob (ABCA 51626) x Peg (ABCA 37208)
Angie
writes the following about Sam:
My brother raised Sam as a pup and I got him at
about 8 months of age. Sam was a natural from the beginning, he had
a natural outrun and was easy to teach to drive. He has a good sense
of balance and a lot of desire to work. Not only is Sam a nice trial
dog but he excels at ranch work as well. Last summer I had a rather
interesting job for him. I d been having a problem with coyotes
getting in the sheep, this resulted in 2 lambs swimming across the
river. When I got them located I went and got Sam; he locked onto
the two lambs standing high up on the brushy bank on the opposite
side of the river. I told him " go bye" and he took off
down the bank, swam the river and got around the spooked lambs. Sam
brought them down to the waters edge and with some encouragement
persuaded them to swim back to our side of the river. He was of
course in close pursuit as dogs can swim faster than sheep and I
really couldn't get him to stop and just float, but all made it over
in good shape!
Angie Coker and Sweep (ABC 36021):
Reserve National Champion
Slick (NASD 39897) x Nell (AIBC 105126)

Angie writes the following about Sweep:
Sweep was about 4 months old when we bought him. I
thought he was kind of ugly but didn't really care since he was to be my
husband's dog. He did eventually fill out and get quite handsome. I had
just started training him at about 10 months of age when we were gone
one weekend and came home to find him under the porch with his front leg
broken up near the shoulder. After 4 months and several surgeries I was
able to resume training on him, after about a month I decided I needed
this dog more than David did! He was about the 3rd dog I'd ever trained,
he taught me a lot about how to read the sheep and their pressure
points. His outrun took some time to develop but his abilities to drive
and read the sheep were outstanding. Sweep is a team player, he is
tremendously loyal, and has a huge amount of heart. Sweep turned 8 in
December 2000.
Kent Kukendall and Dehl (ABC 122239)
Nursery Champion
MP DALE (ABC 81277) x IMP MEGAN (ABC 82560)
Kent
purchased Dehl from Bobby Ford at the age of eight weeks. He was the
kind of pup who always knew where stock was and was very persistent
about getting to them. From the very beginning, Dehl demonstrated a
keenness and natural ability on sheep that was unusual in a dog so
young. Recognizing something was special about this pup, Kent began
working Dehl a little at a very young age before starting formal
training at around eight months. He was easy to train as he did very
little wrong and always seemed eager to learn. The most impressive thing
about him was his cool, calm manner with stock. This natural method with
stock enabled Dehl to mature in his work very quickly. He soon started
running in trials and placed very well in Pro-Novice and Nursery
classes. At only a year and a half, Dehl placed 15th on the challenging
sheep in Virginia at the 1999 Nursery Finals. In the spring of 2000,
Dehl began his Open career, placing well at some of the most prestigious
trials in the country before capping the season with his 2000 Nursery
win in the impressive field of young dogs in this year's Nursery Finals.
