So far the weather is holding out for the first half of the Nursery runs, however we are experiencing blowing winds and expect rain this afternoon.

The sheep are holding good to the course.  The outrun is set at 350 yards and these young dogs are handling the distance well.  The total possible score is 180 with two judges, Pat Shannahan &  Chuck O'Reilly.  To get the scores go back to the 2002 finals information page and click on the running order to get all the latest scores.

The weather is beautiful!  We started about 30 minutes late due to the fog. The field was a little soggy but didn't seem to bother anyone.   The sheep are working good again today.  It looks like we will finish early this afternoon with all 109 runs and we will continue right on with the final 50 today.  The outrun is still the most difficult part of the course, giving some quite a challenge. We are now posting scores in rank order.  We post about every 2 hours so check back often.

We have a
Champion!

Another beautiful day with little to no wind.  The sheep are working very good. Awards will be given out right after the runs and then we will set up for open. Looks like we will finish early. ......  And that we did!   What excitement there was as the runs came in today. .
Congratulations to our 2002 Nursery Champion Barbara Ligon and Queen,
and our 2002 Nursery Champion, Ralph Pulfer and Dan

The Rookie of the Year is awarded to the person who makes it to the top 20 dogs for the first time.  In the event there are several Rookies then the person with the highest placing wins the title.   Congratulation to our 2002 Nursery Rookie of the Year, Emil Luedecke and Ben.

Be sure to check out "photos from the field" at the  2002 finals information page.

How many beautiful days can you get?  Although it was cool this morning, the weather is turning out to be just spectacular again today. The course is very challenging with the outrun reset to 450 yards and the cross drive extended.  The outrun seems to be a little tricky with several redirects.

At the beginning of the open trial a Standard was decided.  When a dog reaches 50 points off,  the standard will be imposed on that run. There will be some cases where the score is 50 or below,  this will happen when the handler is at the pen or the shed and 50 points have not yet been removed and they run out of time.

We ran until dark and got through 52 runs today..

Cool mornings and warming up fast.. Looks like some more "Chamber of Commerce Weather"  However the forecast is calling for a cold front tomorrow with 70% chance of rain and windy on Saturday. The weather will add a challenging twist to the event.   But for today we are enjoying the beautiful weather, with the sheep working good.  Everyone has time for good work at 13 min per run and even with the re-directs most are handlers are meeting their dogs in the shed ring with time to spare.

Thanks to Carol Leeman we had added more pictures to

Today is Payday in more ways than one.  At the end of today we will have our 40 Semi Finalists.  The day has started out with rain but it hasn't seemed to effect the scores. With a possible 100 points -  four out of the first ten scores were above 70.    (the standard has been tightened up to 34 and that could even change more as the day goes on)

Noon  - Still raining, field is getting pretty wet with a few ponds starting to form in the drive pattern.  Instructions from the judge to go around one pond on the first drive leg if necessary.    Will all this rain affect the runs???  I guess not as 4 of the last 6 runs just scored above 80 with Kathy Knox topping it out at 90....  The cutoff is now at a 71 score and it looks as that mark may go up.  Stay tuned...  this is becoming a real nail biter! Check the Scores

3:00 p.m. The rain has stopped but pretty gloomy out.  Please note on the last posting I copied L. Hirsch score wrong it should be 80.   Again hit refresh and it will be correct.    The cutoff is now @ 72.
4:14 p.m. 72 holds!  That's good news for Dave Saunders and  Jill but bad news for the last 6 dogs to run as none of them were able to sneak in.
Running order for Saturday - Top 40 dogs

Some of you have asked how Francis gets these scores up so quickly from the field.

Judges:
Pat Shannahan,
Chuck O'Reilly,
The weather is better than we thought, no rain but very cloudy, we have our fingers  crossed.  The degree of difficulty has increased for today's competition with the handlers working 5 sheep. Of the five sheep, two are marked.  The sheep are brought to the shedding ring where the handler sheds 2 unmarked sheep, puts them back together, pens 5, brings all 5 back to the shed ring and singles one marked sheep.   Total score 220 (110 per judge)   Plenty of time is given to the handlers to finish and a lot of good work is done.
8:15 a.m. posting scores
10:45 a.m. Cold, but still no rain.   Lots of good work this morning with  Amanda Milliken posting the high so far at 206.
1:00 p.m. A standard has been imposed of 60 points off.  scores
3:15 p.m. This is another nail biter with 7 more dogs to run, they must beat 157 and who will get eliminated...  It's a real "Survivor Story"
4:45 p.m.   The cut off is now 163 with Bud Boudreau hanging in there.     I know this is painful but we still have two good dogs to run.
5:10 p.m.  We have our 20 Dogs!  The tie breaker at 164 was the outwork.
Congratulations to all.   We will post the running order for tomorrow after they make the draw at the banquet tonight.
10:00 p.m. About 110 people were at the banquet, Barb Ross reports the highlight of the evening was when her good friend Francis Raley received the very first "USBCHA Lifetime Achievement Award". President Mike Canaday made a very nice presentation to Francis bringing all present to their feet with continuous applause.  There were other awards given which will be reported in the next newsletter.  It was also a good night for District 6.
Here is your running order for the final go on Sunday. We will start to post scores around 9 ish.

Remember when we were kids and we played until dark!   Well that's what we are going to do today.  With limited sunlight and 20 dogs at 25 minutes each it should bring us to dusk. We have three judges scoring 170 each for a total of 510 possible points.  Stay tuned this will be exciting.
6:30 a.m. Cold cloudy morning as we started at 6:30.   The runs are going smooth and the set outs are good.
9:30 a.m.

Today the international gather started off with the dog
casting to the right for the first lot of sheep.

12:00 noon more than half way through, with 11 runs so far.  At this time Scott Glen & Cub are leading the field with a good score of 369.

1:30 pm. Scott Glen's score is still holding but Tom Wilson sure put a scare in him with a very threatening score of 337 moving Tom right up there to the reserve position. . (Last year Scott Glen scored 385 with Fly to become the USBCHA Reserve Champion only to succumb to the 386.5 winning score of Alasdair and Bill - who, by the way, are waiting in the balance to unseat the thrown again.)  But we all know that a strong field of dogs are yet to go to the post.  Bill Burhow and Warren Mick sure look good, but my personal favorite is one of the girls.... Linda Fogt, Linda Hirsch, Amanda Milliken, or Beverly Lambert.  This is exciting!

2:30 p.m. 16 dogs have run and the top position has not changed since the 4th run of the day. Linda Fogt's  good run puts her in 10th place. (but look who's next)
3:10 pm.  Alasdair takes over the lead.  But we all know that the three remaining are not ones you want to follow you when you are in the lead.
4:00 pm.
Amanda moves to 4th and Linda Hirsch's  score of 236 captures 16th place.
One more to go.
4:30 p.m.  Beverly Lambert wows the crowd and sends a sift to the scores, but who did she bump?
