Directors not on call:  Amy Coapman, Bill Evans, CynDee Cooper, Scott Glen

ABCA representative not on call:  Rusty Child

Officers on call:  Mike Canaday, Dan Gill,  Francis Raley (joined called at 6:45 pm central time)

Mike called meeting to order at 7:00.

Amanda moved to accept the minutes of the previous meeting Sandra seconded. Motion passed unanimously.

Mike reported that the ABCA has voted to keep the sponsorship money at the same level as last year for this year’s National Sheep Dog Finals. As everyone knows they give $100 to the top 50 ABCA registered dogs in the first go around of the open. The ABCA directors felt that they wanted to have some day money in the first go around of the Nursery so they are going to write those checks for $100 each to the top 30 of the first go around just as they do in the open. So if the USBCHA wants to keep the $12,000 the same for the final 20 in Nursery we need to either come up with another $3000 or amend our motion to change the top 20 to $9000.

Beverly moved and Jim seconded that we pay $9000 to the top 20 in the nursery. Motion passed unanimously.

Mike reported that there is $15,991 in checking $34,213 in savings livestock $3061 in the sheep fund. In addition we received a check of $8,528 from Steve Clendening as a contribution toward the Finals. We also received a $250 donation from Northern California Working Sheepdog Association and $1075 in ads that don't figure in the total. We have paid $13,000 out of $18,000 on the sheep the rest due on delivery day.

(Correction – Checking Account $15, 991.00 included all benefit and ad money , Francis Raley).

Lena then spoke about her suggestion for the 2003 finals running order. The South Dakota bid wanted to do three days of open, nursery, semi finals and then finals open. Lena suggested that we do the semi final after the three days of open and before the nursery. The advantage would be that the handlers with dogs in the top 50 wouldn't have to wait for the semi-final after the nursery and also it would make a nice final with the nursery final on Saturday and the open final on Sunday. Sandra said she would like to have 50 dogs in the semi final. Amanda said she would like to see it changed to 40 dogs for this year because there isn't enough daylight to run 50 dogs. Dan agreed with Amanda. Kent added his agreement. Amanda asked if we could table Lena’s suggestion until the directors meeting at the finals. Leo said that if we run Sunday to Sunday that gives us three days for the nursery however we fit it in. Leo also said that some of the people he has talked to would rather have the open dogs in front of the most people on Saturday. Stormy seconded Amanda's motion to table. Passed unanimously.

Dan reported that Kent and Vergil were both at the trial field this week. They are concerned about the number of dogs we are going to run on the field. Kent reported that on November 10th there are supposed to be 10.6 hours from sunup to sundown. If we have the current number of nursery dogs to run we need to average 68 dogs a day for three days to get them all run. Mike asked if we could discuss the open run back on Saturday first and go from there. Kent reported that they moved the exhaust pen which should speed things up and there is a holding field at the top of the field so they can move sheep up in the evening for the next day’s running. Stormy moved that we go to 40 dogs on the semi-final.  It was agreed that we would have to go to a standard in both the open and the nursery. Donald suggested that any dog that crosses over or misses a gate should be called off for the standard. Beverly suggested that we go with 45 instead of 40. Lena seconded Stormy’s motion.  Motion passed

Mike moved on to the nursery. Kent said that he would like to go to 50 dogs on the Nursery Finals. After some discussion there was some feeling that people would rather cut back to 50 then have a tight standard on the first runs. Mike suggested that we announce that we were running back the top 50 and if we got done in time with the first runs then we would run back the top 60. Red suggested that we do the same thing in the open. Joyce moved that 50 dogs be run back in the Nursery final, if time allows we will run back more. That decision will be made by the trial committee. Seconded by Stormy. Joyce called the question. Vote unanimous. Beverly moved that a standard will be imposed for the Nursery and should be announced generally. Kent announced that the nursery handlers meeting will be Saturday night and that the open handlers meeting will be on the day before the open begins.  Red asked what the standard was gong to be. Donald said that it makes sense to see how the weather goes and the trial advances. Beverly reported that in the past the trials committee set a standard when it was clear one was needed and based upon the runs already completed. Stormy seconded.   Motion passed

Beverly suggested that if we have enough daylight we let more then 40 dogs run back on Saturday.  General discussion followed.  Decided not to re-visit this issue since it was already voted. Mike suggested that we take everyone who has the 40th score (take all ties to the finals). Kent moved if 40th in open and 50th nursery are tied all go into finals. Stormy seconded. Passed unanimously.

Dan said that he felt that there was concern about the trial committee making these decisions. He said it was an excellent trial committee and they would make good decisions.

Amanda said she would like the USBCHA to have its own chat line so that we could circulate information to all members and get response from members if they would like to. That many people would like to have the news and information without the rest of the chat that exists on the sheepdog list. Generally agreed a good idea to discuss at the annual meeting. Donald moved to table Sandra seconded, passed unanimously.

Donald said we are having a lot of trouble on the east coast with too many entries in the big trials. He asked if we could have some thought on a way to fairly limit entries. Donald said we have been trying to get around it with postmarks. The Wilson's have taken everyone with the correct postmark and had so many entries that they went to one trial over two days. Werner asked if this wasn't a problem for the trial manager rather then the USBCHA. Donald said that one of the things trials wanted to do was let in the regional handlers first which went against USBCHA rules. Sandra said it should be up to the trial manager and shouldn't be imposed by the HA. Beverly moved to table until the Directors meeting at the Finals, Stormy. Passed unanimously.

Gary said he would like to see all the judges’ scores on the final day of the Finals made public on who scored. To be posted after the trial is over. Passed unanimously.

Beverly moved to adjourn, Stormy seconded. Meeting adjourned at 8:00.
